Attic Location Analysis (9th November) – Lincoln BIG Attic Space

This blog post will be a short analysis of another location the media students have found.

We were going to use the spare room in the producer’s house as the location for the film, but Mikey Murray, the media group’s supervisor for this module wanted them to try and find somewhere better. The students found a space in Lincoln Business Improvement Group’s attic, which consisted of two rooms up a set of stairs, of which the media students only needed one.

I went to have a look at the space, and found that there was a lot of traffic noise constantly filtering through both rooms, coming mainly from the main road going up the hill. The ceiling was also rather low, and there were two tube lights installed that could make booming an issue, or potentially be a hazard. The floor is bare concrete, and noise from the office workers can sometimes be heard coming from downstairs as well. Overall I would say that purely in terms of audio, Hannah’s (the producer) spare room would be better, however visually the attic space is far nicer and more claustrophobic. We’ll have to make sure we use the Sennheiser 416’s hyper-cardioid pattern effectively and try and catch the traffic noise side on, effectively rejecting the background noise while recording high quality dialogue and on-site Foley. I unfortunately did not think to capture any pictures during the location visit, but I believe the media students will be using this location. We begin shooting on the 12th-14th November, and I’ll post an evaluation of the Location Recording a few days after shooting has concluded.
